Elevator Prices

Elevator prices are affected by several factors.

First is the cost of the fixture. Larger elevators that go up more floors tend to cost more than smaller models that only go up two floors. A custom design – now a luxury type of elevator – also contributes to a higher price tag. Elevator prices in total include more than the car and hoistway. Installation is a significant cost for installing an elevator, and in the long-term, a permit and regular inspections become part of owning an elevator.

In general, a home elevator is priced from $15,000 to $100,000, depending upon type, size, and features.

An affordable design, a pneumatic elevator typically costs between $20,000 and $28,000, and installation is minimal. Little to no construction is needed, as the hoistway and car are installed directly into the house or building. Size is a downside for pneumatic elevators, as only one or two people can fit inside. A pneumatic elevator, additionally, is not wheelchair accessible.

Standard elevators are often wheelchair accessible but require more installation and planning. Installing a hydraulic elevator may be $20,000 to $30,000, as a pit, machine room, and a hoistway all need to be planned and built into your home.

Elevator prices are influenced by the overall design.

Larger elevators generally cost more, as do systems that go up more floors. Additional features inside the car also contribute to the price. Added for emergencies, a phone may be an extra $50 to $200, and certain types of doors or hand rails also influence the price.

A luxury item, a custom elevator can be designed to blend in with your home or building. A car can have finished wood paneling, metal, stone, or a unique shape, such as an old-fashioned birdcage, but a unique design and additional features make a residential elevator cost significantly more.

Many areas require homeowners to purchase a permit, which can cost $200 to $1,000, before installing a home elevator. Yearly inspections are also recommended.
